Dear Visitor ji,
The first couple of months were filled with events and activities for the executive committee of FINACT. After the successful event of Independence Day celebration at Theo Notaras Centre on 15 August, the FINACT has been engaged in a number of different activities of community interest.
Meetings with our leaders
As part of an engagement exercise, the FINACT executive committee held meetings with Dr Anderw Leigh MP (Member from Fraser) on 28 August, Mr Jeremy Hanson MLA (leader of opposition ) on 1st September, Senator Katy Gallagher on 2nd September and with Senator Zed Seselja on 4th September. We are pleased to inform you that Ms Yvette Berry MLA, the Minister for Multicultural Affairs has kindly accepted to become the Patron of the FINACT. The Federation is very keen to work for community under the guidance and patronage of Minister Berry.
In these meeting FINACT introduced the elected representatives with concerns and public welfare initiatives led by Indian communities and associations, for example:
- The concerns of ACT taxi drivers with regards to the UBER ride and share
- Upcoming FINACT T-20 Cricket Tournament
- A project to develop a better understanding of the nature of domestic violence against immigrant women of South Asian ancestry in the ACT region by FINACT member association, especially by iWin.
Community concerns and assistance
In our deliberations, matters ranging from domestic violence among families of South Asian background, the outstanding request for India Centre and also a Christian Church for the Malayalee community (who still use the 'Aramaic dialect - Syriac' spoken by Jesus, as their liturgical language) were raised with appropriate authorities.
We are particularly thankful to the High Commission of India for providing the financial support to one of the victims of domestic issues (Indian citizen) on FINACT’s recommendations.
Community engagement
FINACT also held meetings with ACT Cricket and reached an agreement to hold the FINACT T-20 Cricket Tournament 2015 in partnership with ACT Cricket. This will be an official event in the calendar of ACT Cricket and the statistics for the FINACT matches will be available on myCricket website.
The tournament for this year will be starting on Sun 25 October 2015. All captains and managers have been contacted and briefed about the details. If you wish to support and sponsor this pupular tournament, please contact Secretary as soon as possible.
The FINACT GC meeting will be held on 13 October 2015 at the Australian Parliament House (courtesy Senator Zed Seselja). A formal notification with details will be sent to all the member associations very soon.

Independence Day Cup - India XI vs Pakistan X1
Bringing the love affair of Cricket to Canberra, the Indian and Pakistani community of Canberra, the young and enthusiastic boys of Indian and Pakistani origin have taken an initiative, and have started a friendly cricket competition.
FINACT supported the initiative and the series was named Independence Day Cricket Series, The three match series started the weekend falling after 14-15 August this year. The first two matches went in Indian team's favour and this is how Indian boys bagged the series. The final match was played in Nicholls Oval on 6 September 2015. In the third and final match the Pakistani boys defeated Indian team but still conceded the series 1-2.
The event was supported and sponsored by Mr Rakesh Bhutani of Canberra Business and Technology College and Mr Pankaj Monga of Monga Indian Grocery.
Rakesh and Pankaj, both being an ardent fan of the game have been a keen participant in various cricketing activities around Canberra, thus there was no convincing required for them to become a part of this glorious event.

A Conversation for Everyone: Advance Health Care Planning in the ACT
What is Advanced Care Planning?
Making sure that someone can speak for you if you are unable or choose not to speak for yourself.
Why do it?
So your wishes are honoured.
Some things to think about:
- If you were ill and could not speak for yourself who would you want to speak for you?
- Have you spoken to them about how you feel?
- Do they know what you want and how you want to be treated?
How to make sure that your wishes are known:
- Talk with your family and anyone else you feel could help you
- Decide whether you want to fill in official paperwork or
- Write a letter stating your wishes and then
- Contact Health Care Consumers 'A Conversation for Everyone' who will register it with The Canberra Hospital.
Remember:
- The most important thing is to have the conversation with your family
- You can always ask for help.
Lastly, if you would like to
Have help talking with your family
Have help with filling in forms
Talk more about anything we have discussed today
Conducted by Christine Bowman
