On the occasion of the first International Day of Yoga, High Commission of India and Federation of Indian Association of ACT (FINACT) along with many Yoga schools are organising a series of public events. Events will be held on this Sun 7 June 2015, Sat 13 June and Sun 14 June at the High Commission of India and the Mass Yoga practice to mark the International Day of Yoga on Sun 21 June in East-West Lawns, Old Parliament House. Australia being a Yoga loving country has a large number of people interested in and practising Yoga - in different forms. We have over 25 Yoga schools in Canberra alone. The main purpose of this is to enhance and promote awareness of the Yoga and its social, mental, intellectual and physical health benefits to the wider Australian community.
The event on Sun 21 June 2015 is expected to be attended by a large number of people performing Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation to demonstrate Yoga. Talks by number of dignitaries and experts are also planned in the event.
You are most welcome to attend all or any of these events (registration required).
Yoga an embodiment of....
The declaration came after the call for the adoption of 21 June as International Day of Yoga by Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi during his address to UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014. He stated that
"Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day."
The United Nations General Assembly adopted and declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga on December 11, 2014.
